TRAVEL TO TASTE
TRAVEL AND TASTE WITH FEDERICA
Federica Giuliani, journalist and storyteller, travels to talk about places and foods from around the world. Travel to taste is the blog where he writes about his experiences of travel and flavours.
Welcome to Easy Travel Hosting! Could you tell us a little about yourself and how your blog was born?
When, 11 years ago, I decided to open a blog I had in mind the thought of showing off my writing skills, hoping to become an author and journalist.
Within a short time I was contacted by the director of a travel web magazine, starting my journey towards journalism. I immediately specialized in tourism and gastronomy (especially world cuisines) because they were the topics that I knew best and that I was most passionate about. The name “Travel to Taste” – a registered trademark – it seemed perfect to express my way of traveling and telling stories.
Today, I edit the travel newspaper travelglobe.it and write about international cuisines for the newspaper La Stampa. For now I have published two books (one on Türkiye and one on India) and a tourist guide on Türkiye. My first novel, however, is looking for a publisher.

Travel, flavors and smells, the discovery of a place through the senses. Which country surprised you the most with its unexpected dishes?
To tell the truth, it is found “of the good” in every area of the world: just taste without prejudice. But there are countries that offer greater variety, making the gastronomic experience more fun and satisfying.
Thailand is one of those places, but also Vietnam where I liked to start the day with a breakfast of cold rice rolls stuffed with noodles, vegetables and shrimp.
In Finland, however, I surprised myself by appreciating lichens.

Traveling often takes you out of your comfort zone. Have you ever found yourself in unpleasant or difficult to manage situations?
When I can I travel with my off-road vehicle, equipped with a tent on the roof. In this way I have made some of the most beautiful journeys: crossing Syria and Jordan, I reached the Red Sea of Aqaba; I visited Armenia and celebrated Christmas in the Sahara.
And when traveling on the road it is not difficult to run into problems and misunderstandings, especially at customs between one country and another. With experience you learn not to be discouraged or scared: in these cases it is important to know international laws well and always respect the rules.

The pollution of the planet is skyrocketing but it seems that on the one hand there is an awakening on the part of many people about it, and a greater awareness, perhaps also thanks to social media. What do you think?
I believe that everyone, in their own small way, must contribute to improving the conditions of the planet. The recent pandemic, for example, has forced us to review some ways of travelling; if before we all seemed like crazy balls busy organizing holidays and weekends away, I hope that from now on we will try to travel with greater responsibility and awareness, avoiding low cost tourism, which has produced an overtourism that is no longer sustainable.
As regards the role of social media in all this, I believe that at the moment they are more of a place to show off photos of the destinations conquered. But I'm counting on the fact that this too will change, to leave more space for dialogue and less for appearances.
