I SAW THAT IN ADDITION TO BEING A TRAVELER YOU ARE A MUSICIAN. TELL US ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH MUSIC

I'm not a professional, I'm one of many who have grazed for a long time in a sort of limbo. I play the guitar, mainly electric, and I lived about twenty years in the underground between record companies, recording studios, tours and band life.
Thanks to music I was able to travel a lot in Italy, Europe, Asia and Latin America. All this, as I was saying, without ever making it a real profession, unfortunately.

The human-music relationship is a theme on which I have found myself, willingly or not, having to continually think about over the years. Just recently I finished writing a book called 'Check Sound' (out in May from Prospettiva editrice),
which through my direct experience tells of how the world of music and entertainment have drastically changed since the advent of the digital revolution.

MUSIC AND TRAVEL, HOW MUCH DOES MUSIC INFLUENCE YOUR TRAVELS AND HOW MUCH DO YOU SEEK IT IN TIMES AWAY FROM HOME?

I'm not one of those always with headphones in my ears, and maybe this will surprise you. Except when I'm behind the wheel, I prefer to enjoy the sound environment around me, whether I'm trekking or wearing myself out in an endless transfer on a bus.

A nice playlist can certainly enrich the moment if, for example, you're driving with your arm out the window at sunset in the Mojave desert, but if shot constantly through a headset it risks causing some grip on the present to slip through your hands, isolating you from a good portion of the experience. It's not for me.

AN ARTICLE THAT STRUCK ME WAS: 15 SIGNS THAT TELL YOU YOU ARE LEARNING TO TRAVEL. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU KNOW HOW TO TRAVEL?

As I explain in the article, I don't even know if there is such a thing as 'knowing how to travel', but there is certainly such a thing as traveling with greater awareness. I realized that I had increased this awareness when I realized that my backpack weighed half as much, I no longer booked anything, I no longer worried about having everything under control and I willingly accepted the possibility of inconveniences because it is the very essence of a trip.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR LIFE GREENER?

I believe that ecological sustainability is a direct consequence of a certain way of understanding travel. No internal flights (unless strictly necessary), overnight stays in small local accommodations, food that is as local as possible and in general a low budget approach.

They are small things that in aggregate can make a difference, with the hope that a growing sensitivity towards these issues will develop because Canadians, Russians and Americans really can't stand seeing yet another stretch of coast disfigured by the inevitable eco-monster.

As long as we travel to enter a comfort zone larger than the one we live in every day we will not get out of it, but to reverse this course we need a cultural shift that encounters much resistance in the consumer society.

Perhaps an hour a week in compulsory school dedicated to the culture of sustainable travel, an awareness-raising space to stimulate the new generations on certain topics, would not be a bad idea. Everyone travels as they want, let's be clear, but it remains undeniable that some approaches cause more negative externalities than others and we will have to start raising some money.
