Hi Enrico and welcome to Easy Travel Hosting! Mescalina Backpacker, a backpacking travel blog, but also an internal journey to discover ourselves through the discovery of the world. Do you want to talk to us about how this blog was born?
Here I am, thanks to you for the opportunity. The blog was born in 2013 even though I had been working on it for years and only thanks to Alessio's help was I able to put my ideas into practice.
I have been backpacking since I was 16, 25 years ago. For years I toured first Europe and then Asia, Africa, Central America and the Middle East without all the comforts and technological accessories that today are, even for me, almost indispensable.
Only 10 years ago, if you opened the internet and looked for some information on how to organize a backpacker trip anywhere in the world you would only find 2-3 Italian sites (even poorly made ones), the Lonely Planet forum and a few sites in English.
It is the Lonely, for many as for me, the traveller's bible. The only means I had to plan, inform myself, decide, book, hypothesize any type of itinerary. After her, nothing.
So I started writing, article after article, and today if you go to Google and try to organize a backpacking trip in one of the countries I've been to, you often find Mescalina Backpacker on the first page.
One of the objectives of the blog is to explain that travel can be done even with limited time and budget. Can you explain how?
Easy to leave without worrying about how much to spend, even easier to leave having all the time possible.
Our trips are all designed for those who have holiday and money limits.
Usually most kids have between 10 and 15 days off and that's why they think they can't go to a certain place because the days are few.
Absolutely wrong: in 10-15 days you can go, have fun and return from any place in the world.
You just need to inform yourself just enough.
And we try to give that little bit of information that has always allowed us to go everywhere, many times running, many others taking hours and hours on the bus, still others doing grueling tours, not sleeping, not eating, returning to Fiumicino and after three hours going to work or leaving after two hours of being disconnected, but going wherever the hell we wanted, without any limitations.
Each Mescalina Backpacker trip lasts between 7 and 25 days, with a budget of €1000 to €1500, all inclusive: flight, visa, hotels, restaurants, transport, excursions and various expenses.
The secret is not to book anything from home, you only make useful contacts, and, apart from the first night in a hotel usually booked from home, you contact them directly on site.
And we share all our experiences and everything we have experienced firsthand, where we slept, where we ate and what, the means by which we moved, the excursions we took, the adventures and misadventures that happened to us.
Among the many trips you have made, would you tell us about the one to Guatemala, a land that is particularly close to us?
Guatemala is one of those trips that enters your heart and never leaves. I'll tell you just two places: Lake Atitlan and Tikal. Lake Atitlan, which for the Maya is "the place where the rainbow takes its colors" is one of the places that, stealing Terzani's words about Bagan, makes you proud to belong to the human race.
A magical, poetic, romantic location, a place that seems like a fairy tale, a fairy tale that looks like a pastel painting lost in an enchanted valley that seems fake because of how sweet it is and where life flows slowly and relaxed.
In Tikal, however, we arrive when it is still night, the stars are out and the gates are closed, but we still manage to leave our two backpacks at the ticket office, buy the ticket and enter before everyone else.
Running we reach the top of Temple 4, the highest temple (64 metres), the temple of the Two-Headed Serpent and alone, in absolute silence we enjoy the birth of a new day.
Tell us now about one of your adventures in Southeast Asia!
I've seen a bit of Southeast Asia. Laos, Cambodia and Burma are locations that, like Guatemala, you will never forget. Ride your bike for days among the rice fields in the temples of Bagan, or visit the Buddhist temples of Luang Prabang, stop, sleep, read or meditate with some monks, go up the river from Battabang to Siem Reap in atmospheres like Apocalipse Now.

What do you think of this project and in general, do you think it is important to seek a more sustainable lifestyle?
