Moira and Raffaella's On The Road trips

Today we talk to you about Moira and Raffaella, the bloggers of Food & Trips the blog specializing in road trips in the USA and Europe.

The idea of opening a blog was born towards the beginning of 2019, but in reality the desire to tell their experiences came at the beginning of 2018 immediately after a traumatic event that took them by mistake to a small island in the Azores.
Their passion for travel and food can be felt by reading their articles and looking at their photos. In their blog you will find routes, maps and reviews of the facilities they tried during their travels with the aim of helping other travellers. During 2019 they visited 56 locations in Italy and abroad, they invested their free time studying and planning what will be their first year as professional bloggers.
Will 2020 be the turning point year?

I READ THAT YOU HAD A QUITE TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE DURING A TRIP. A LUCKY LANDING. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?

Yes it was an event that literally changed our lives. It gave us the awareness of how your life can really end in a second, without being able to do anything. We felt a fear we had never felt before and which is impossible to describe. From that moment on we thought about enjoying life more. We try to do the things we like most and we get angry much less. Our vision of objectives has changed profoundly. Are you curious to know what happened? This is a brief summary of what happened on flight AA206 on the night of 02/16/2018.

We had spent a week relaxing and snorkeling in Florida – between Miami and Key West. A beautiful trip at the end of which we felt truly recharged. Ready to get back to work! We board at Miami airport to return to Milan. Check-in, checks, boarding. Everything perfect. We are sitting on the plane, a Boeing 767 that is at least 20 years old. There is no type of entertainment on board and there is not even the possibility of charging our devices.

But it's night and we plan to get some sleep. The departure is quiet, they serve us dinner and then distribute earphones to follow the collective TV. We have a video every 4 files. We spend the first few hours of the flight reading, doing crosswords, and before falling asleep we play a bit’ on cards. We've been sleeping for about an hour when we hear the captain's announcement. It's almost 4 in the morning. The captain in a calm and composed tone informs us that the plane has a technical problem with the engine and it is necessary to land as soon as possible. We don't know where. We raise the window curtain. AND’ dark. Nothing can be seen. Let's take a look at the monitor in the middle rows, where you can see the route. We are in the middle of the ocean.

A few minutes later the monitor is turned off for safety. Nobody speaks anymore. We all sit in absolute silence. More announcements follow. After a few minutes the captain informs us of the imminent landing on a small island in the Azores. We are relieved. We won't end up in the sea.
Our landing is something terrible. A terrifying impact. We see sparks from the windows. Once on the ground we were informed that the plane had been traveling for over 3 hours with one engine off, the second engine working but broken and a mechanical problem with the brakes. 323 unharmed passengers landed by chance at Lajes airport, thanks to a pilot who used reverse thrust to stop the aircraft on a very short runway. Every time we think about that night we feel miraculous.

GASTRONOMY AND TRAVEL, AN ESSENTIAL COMBINATION FOR YOU?

Our blog was born to combine two of our greatest passions: travel and food. Food is a part of the journey for us. The journey through the flavors and customs of the local people is truly a fundamental part of our adventures for us.

We consider ourselves two great connoisseurs of pizza, but the truth is that we love to eat. And sometimes even cooking with rather rustic results. We like to look for new raw materials, possibly zero km and when we travel we taste typical dishes, new flavors and much more. We also happen to want to taste the interpretation of Italian flavors abroad and in some situations we have even appreciated it.

When we are out of Italy, we often organize meetings “food challenge” as we did on our last road trip in the USA when we decided to taste different burgers and decide at the end of the trip, the winner of the “Best Hamburger of the year”. The same thing happened in Andalusia in January with the “Best Galician Octopus”.

YOU HAVE PUBLISHED AN ARTICLE THAT UNDERLINES HOW BLOGGERS ARE HOSTED. WHAT DIFFICULTIES HAVE YOU HAD DURING YOUR JOURNEY AS A BLOGGER?

We didn't find any major difficulties, but we didn't like some of the attitudes and clichés that continue to revolve around the figure of “blogger”, especially on social media where anyone feels free to write anything. The article in question was written in one go, immediately after one “half” discussion that took place on a Facebook group specializing in travel.

Frankly we cannot accept certain attitudes aimed at “relegate” the figure of the blogger like that of the “freeloader” on duty, because we are not freeloaders. Maybe some people think they can ask to stay in hotels and other places for free, but the vast majority of bloggers, the serious ones, don't need to ask.

Or rather, it really focuses on what it can do for the facility in question and does not have the goal of staying for free. Because of certain individuals who invented themselves as bloggers to try to travel for free, the entire category of professional bloggers who do this job with passion and dedication are affected.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR TRIPS MORE ECOLOGICAL?

The environmental issue is very close to our hearts. We like to think that by educating people we can achieve a better and more sustainable quality of life. In our small way we have almost completely eliminated plastic from our travels and from our daily life. But not only this.

We are committed to reducing waste more and more and have switched to purchasing many products in bulk, without packaging. For our travels we have become fond of bamboo cotton buds, solid shampoo and 100% organic personal hygiene products. Other essential accessories for our trips are: the water bottle and fabric bags.
