Eventually Busy
Ellie's guide to moving
and live in London

London can enchant, fascinate, and even bewitch a tourist. But what does it really mean to live in London? Ellie tells us about it in her blog Eventually Busy

WHAT MADE YOU GO TO LIVE IN LONDON?

I grew up in a rather international environment, living between Canada, Greece, Kenya, the Canary Islands and various other places. So at some point I moved to Cheshire, in the north of England. Because it was the easier choice all things considered. I have a very Anglo-Saxon background, education and mentality due to my background, and therefore it was a spontaneous choice.

But I arrived in London later! Maybe I needed more life than the beautiful Cheshire countryside! I even left London for a little while, but then I came back because for me it is home, and despite the thousand experiences in other countries, it is currently the place where I feel best. Although it is not a perfect place, but what city is perfect?!

WHAT DO YOU ADVICE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO MOVE NOW?

To be really well informed. Leaving aside the Brexit issue, which implies new rules, new procedures, etc. – apart from this, you need to know things well, how to move, and have a great, great desire to integrate.

I've seen Italians arrive and live in an "Italian bubble", and then say they didn't like it. Well, they never even made the attempt to know the place, the people, the food, the culture. Zero. This is the biggest mistake. Home is where you feel good, and if you move to a country, you want to feel good, I think. So it's nice to experience the place 100% and feel like it's yours.

WHAT ABOUT A TOURIST WHO HAS NEVER SEEN THE CITY?

I recommend living it really looking, if they have time, not to stop at the most touristy places. I understand that if you come for a few days for the first time, you want to see the most famous things.

But when you return you can spend more time in less touristy places. London does not represent England, but in residential areas it is possible to see "normal" neighborhood life. With the local non-touristy cafe, the pub on the corner frequented by local people, the streets with the butcher's shop, the shoemaker, etc. – In short, more real areas than Piccadilly Circus!

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR TRIPS MORE ECOLOGICAL?

I admit, I have never paid too much attention to these things except in recent years, but now if I can I try to make a small contribution. Starting with a simple water bottle, which in London you can get filled with water for free in almost every Coffee Shop.

One very small thing we can do, and what I do, is try to use the various apps for tickets and reservations, so we don't print anything on paper, which is then immediately thrown away. Here in London I don't use the car, because it's not needed, but if I travel outside, I try to use the train.

Another small thing I do is to no longer buy useless things when traveling. They are a waste, not only of money, but also of various packaging! We are tempted by the adrenaline of the new journey, we would like to buy even the most banal things, but often we don't do anything with it! Let's think about it 😊
