The anti-traveler was a young man curious to discover the world, then he was a sophisticated and fashionable intellectual, and now he has become a mature gentleman who is rediscovering some of his childhood dreams: and turning into a cartoon is one of them.
Your web presence shows a great passion for literature, cinema and art. How do they intersect with your love of travel?
The lowest common denominator has always been other cultures. I graduated with a thesis in History of Afro-Asian countries, I loved African music very much, I managed a furniture and ethnic art shop, and in the meantime I travelled: to learn, to understand.
Cinema, on the other hand, is a more recent interest, somehow linked to the natural evolution and latest prospects of my activity as an author.
Give us this image: a place, a song and a reflection on that place.
I give you Canada. But not that of the big cities: that of the boundless forests far from everything and everyone.
Newfoundland Island, 2006. A wooden house nestled among the trees. The owner, as is customary in those parts, had left me the keys and had gone away somewhere else: I was alone for miles around.
I turn on the radio to keep myself company, breaking the disturbing silence of the night and, after a long presentation that I didn't really understand where it was going, the notes of a magical song that I had never heard, by a singer I had never heard of: it was The Mummers' Dance by Loreena McKennitt.
Sweet and melancholic music that evokes love for the past and tradition, which speaks to you of solitude and courage, of a life left behind and of a whole one yet to begin, in a beautiful, indifferent and at times hostile nature.
Welcome beyond the sea, where anything can happen: it's all up to you…
What do you do to make your travels greener?
For me ecology means ethics. My own ethics, not standardized.
Having said this, you ask me what I do to make my travels eco-friendly. It's easy to say: I never travel by car and as little as possible by road, I find it a means of transport that is both invasive and distancing at the same time.
And I try not to leave too strong a personal imprint in fragile places: the objective must be to leave the place and the people the same, after you have passed. And therefore little waste, no noise, never breaking local balances. I'll try. A tourist, a traveler must feel this responsibility.
Which is the same thing you would ask and ask anyone who comes around your house. Never judge too much, help instead.
The homeless people of Dublin know something about this, where I always willingly return when I can, and to whom I leave the old clothes that I brought and wore, the evening before my departure.
A way like any other of remaining in a place of the heart, in silence, without appearing, without distorting it. We are made to listen, to pass in silence: otherwise, why travel?
There is no need if you are only in love with the sound of your own voice… Well this is me, I hope that's enough… ecological.
