30 AnnoZero
The new beginning of Marianna and Antonio

Routine often swallows up dreams, which are put in a drawer that never opens. But this is not the case with Marianna and Antonio. 30 Year Zero it is their blog, where they tell us about their journey around the world.

LET'S START FROM THE TITLE OF YOUR BLOG: 30 YEAR ZERO. CAN YOU EXPLAIN IT TO US?

30annozero was our year zero, in the sense that we abandoned what we had built up until then (a job that was renewed year after year, a rented house in Milan) and we dedicated it to ourselves, to the things that were closed in a drawer.

Well, perhaps 30annozero is the opening of a drawer full of things we wanted to do, things that we decided not to postpone and dream about but to take the courage with all four hands (two mine and two Antonio's) and go. We returned to Naples and organized the world tour, took into account the budget and the stages, the friends who could host us and the places we didn't want to miss, embraced the unexpected and changed our perspective.

YOU HAVE MADE A WONDERFUL TRIP AROUND THE WORLD, TELL US ABOUT IT!

The actual journey, that is, when the plane left the runway, was in June but our journey began much earlier. When we imagined it, when we had a wonderful chat with Matteo Pennacchi of Around The World Tours and chose the destinations that would lead us to complete the world tour with 52 thousand kilometers traveled in 3 months, when we weighed our suitcases and the scales showed 13 kilograms and there was everything we needed with very little that was superfluous, when our friends started asking us “will you take us with you?” and to organize farewell parties.

But beyond the worn pairs of shoes and the washing machines lying around, adapting and experiencing each moment as what it is, unique, the journey continued and continues today in our approach to life. That of thinking little about the destination but enjoying the journey, precisely.
Our first stop was Barcelona, a lively city where a dear friend lives with whom we experienced the squares, the beaches, the alleys of the Catalans. From there by bus, traveling at night, we reached the Basque pearl that is Donostia-San Sebastián, where we stayed with a couple of friends who were expecting a baby girl at the time and chose together what her name would be.

We then reached Bilbao and traveled to London, in the busiest leg of the trip. There were 8 of us in London, with 4 different backgrounds, friends of ours who didn't know each other. From there the Around World Ticket officially started and it was written on our plane ticket “World Traveller”. The first of the intercontinental trips of our 30annozero took us to Orlando precisely for the 4th of July, the Canadian cranes, the fireworks and spending time with my uncles are things I will always remember. It was time to cross America and get to the stop that among the many had made Antonio and me agree the most: San Francisco. The most amazing city. Here we were guests of our new friends Julie, Dan and Zev, occupying their sofa thanks to couchsurfing. With them I remember the walk on the beach under the hang gliders they brought back “If you can read this, move!”.
In San Francisco, on the Golden Gate Bridge, Antonio asked me to marry him. And after this request (I said yes, for the record) we faced one of the longest flights on the globe: Los Angeles-Melbourne, 17 and a half hours. We had been in warm places, in spring or summer, in Melbourne it was winter and we only ever had thirteen kilos of luggage. From Melbourne we got married in Sydney where I remember the perfection of the gardens and the scent of eucalyptus from the Blue Mountains. From Australia we landed in Thailand, in Bangkok where we visited the temples with a local friend. From here we returned to London, I remember that there was a super moon to greet the end of our journey.

I SAW THAT YOU CONCEIVE TRAVEL AS PERSONAL ENRICHMENT. WHAT HAS CHANGED IN YOUR LIVES SINCE YOU STARTED TRAVELING?

Exactly. Our gaze has changed, with respect to the destination, to unexpected events, to the solution of problems, to the number of friends we have all over the world and to the fact that we try to stay in contact with them also using means such as WhatsApp or Instagram.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR TRIPS MORE ECOLOGICAL?

After this great journey today our trips are short and very short haul also because our Benedetta arrived in June. We are dedicating ourselves to discovering and rediscovering Campania, Puglia, Basilicata and Italy in general in very small steps. We don't buy souvenirs, we prefer local markets, luggage reduced to a minimum and waste eliminated as much as possible.
