Inside Rio de Janeiro
SIMONE, Brazil and Rio

What do you think when I say Rio de Janeiro? Colors, to the carnival, To an exotic destination I imagine. Today, however, we explore the most hidden sides, Thanks to the guide of Simone. Inside Rio de Janeiro It is the blog where for years it has collected stories, Itineraries and information for those who are about to visit this very interesting city and Brazil.

Hi Simone, Welcome to Easy Travel hosting! Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, What brought you to this land and how your site is born?

Pleasure! I've always been passionate about Latin America and studies in sociology have brought me to Brazil. In the 2004, Thanks to a scholarship of the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, The speaker of my thesis in international relations asked me if I wanted to leave for Rio de Janeiro and carry out a field research. I didn't think twice and I embarked.

Once my work on Rio's favelas and graduate once completed, I have no longer broken the ties with the large South American country. Incentriodejaneiro was born a few years later. Initially, Like many web projects born in those years, It was a simple site with which on the one hand I wanted to express my gratitude towards Rio de Janeiro, city that had conquered me e, on the other, help those like me who need information to organize the trip and stay in the wonderful city.

Over time, The portal grew and, In addition to an online tour guide, It has become a blog that in addition to my articles also hosts contributions from other authors. In addition to telling places and experiences lived in Rio and in other areas of the country, The themes are Brazilian culture and events involving Italy and Brazil, two countries that share a lot even if, Unfortunately, It is not very talked about.

Today, Incentriodejaneiro It is a point of reference for all those who have to travel to Brazil or simply love the large tropical country and want to read quality content that talk about it. The people who write to me from the site or through the Page Facebook asking for information there are many and this can only make me immense pleasure.

We read a very interesting article about Pasolini's trip to Brazil, where he spent time together with Maria Callas in exceptional circumstances. You would like to talk about this episode?

What you are talking about is a little great example of the link between the two countries. The piece was written by a blog collaborator, Claudia, who carried out the doctorate in Italy and is an expert in Italian and Brazilian literature and Pasolini in particular.

The story of Cláudia explains the journey to Brazil of the great poet and immense Maria Callas well, Her friend. The two randomly passed through Recife and met Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.

Pasolini was particularly impressed by reality by favelas and glimpses several analogies with the Italian suburbs: popular air, The injustices and the pressure of consumerism that causes cultural flattening. Alla breve parentesi brasiliana, Some poems are dedicated that Pasolini collected in the book "Trasumanar and organizing" published in 1971.

Rio's lights and shadows, how complex the situation of this city and a country like Brazil is? What is tourists do not see and don't want to see?

Rio de Janeiro is a huge city that contains many worlds and Brazil has the size of a continent where different cultures and ethnic groups have merged and live together. By force of things we are faced with a very complex reality.

I always think that the way in which the image of Brazil is transmitted here it is bizarre and superficial. On the one hand, The country is seen as the home of joy and colors e, on the other, it is considered a violent place, dangerous, extreme and where everything is exaggerated.

There is probably a little truth in both aspects but I think of Brazil we speak little and bad and this is not right when dealing with a country that has about thirty million descendants of Italians.

Specifically, Rio de Janeiro is a city of varied contrasts and identities. The tourist, generally, He knows a small extract that, geographically speaking, It is limited to two or three neighborhoods in the southern area of the city (Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, which together occupy a negligible surface) and to the two best known attractions (The Redeemer Christ and the Pan di Zucchero).

Everything else is a territory unknown to most, although there is a lot to explore and know. Just think that Rio de Janeiro has a coast of 197 km or that the tradition of samba comes from the central neighborhoods of Rio, the oldest, And it is in the favelas and in the bars of the north area that is more alive. Limiting yourself to know only the most tourist points also means ignoring that Rio de Janeiro is not only a postcard city but it is also a place of strong inequalities, where about the 20% of the inhabitants lives in favelas.

How is the Brazilian situation regarding recycling and respect for the environment?

From an environmental point of view, Brazil is experiencing a decidedly negative season due to the many political choices, at least questionable, undertaken by the current federal government: cuts in the resources of environmental control bodies, privatization of national parks, legalization of mining extraction in indigenous lands and relaxation of the contrast to deforestation have made many steps back to the country, who is a treasure of biodiversity and landscape wonders.

Compared to waste management policies and material recycling it is difficult to give a univocal response, Since the situation is different in each individual state and also at the municipal level there are different answers to the topic.

What I feel I can affirm is that, especially among young people, There is growing attention to the themes of reduction (Especially of USA plastic, throwing), recycling and reuse but that in too many cases there are no adequate infrastructure and collection systems.

For this reason, large landfills are still central in the waste management cycle (despite the 2010 Brazil had decided to overcome them) and for this, to date, Brazil only recycles the 4% of the waste it produces.

A real shame both for the environment and for the economy.
